My connecting flight out of Honolulu is delayed NINE FUCKING HOURS for maintenance. What are they doing, replacing a wing?

The whole point of flying via HNL rather than direct SFO-AKL was that it was a daytime flight so I wouldn’t need to sleep in a cattle class seat. So much for that genius plan.

AMA, I guess - fuck all else to do in Honolulu airport .

Something almost as unreliable as a Hawaiian A330 for your time.

That sucks, I know the feeling of being stuck on a long delay, but t hings happen and break, luckily they found the issue and are fixing it instead of you flying on it.

My big problem is that I have arthritis in my neck, and if I fall asleep sitting up I’ll be on painkillers for a couple of weeks. So this is going to really fuck me up. And unfortunately Hawaaian only fly to AKL twice a week and AirNZ are booked out for the next few days, so I’m stuck with it.

Nine hours is long enough to leave the airport, Uber into Waikiki, get hammered on the beach, go to one of Honolulu’s shady strip clubs, Uber back, and still be early for your flight.

At first I thought that was a really long delay. Then I recall simple car repairs taking nine hours. I wouldn’t trust my car to fly in the air. 9 hours to fix a plane sounds pretty speedy. Heck, I wouldn’t mind if that repair person took a tenth hour hour just to double check all the bolts are torqued properly. Anyone have an auto repair time manual? I wonder what manufacturers peg at 9 hours (must be done in 6 for warranty work).

Actually I’m guessing 9 hours is either “how long it takes to find a new plane and/or crew” or “how long it takes to fly a trivial part from the mainland and fit it”. I suspect aircraft repair times are measured in minutes or days, not hours. F86sabre can probably confirm or deny though.

Good points , they can’t just swing down to Advance Auto, they might have to go to the mainland or switch planes.

Unfortunately I don’t have that long - it took them 3 hours to tell us it’ll be 9 hours. And 6 more, less immigration & security doesn’t leave enough to be worth it. Plus it’s rainin g :-(

Actually, killing time in the airport doesn’t bug me - there’s a bar and I’ve got a book. It’s turning a day flight into a redeye I’m pissy about.

I’d like to get there on time. I travel internationally a shitload with work. In the last couple of years I’ve flown multiple times each with Singapore, Cathay, Lufthansa, Qantas, Air NZ, Turkish, LAN, Aeromexico, and BA, plus odd flights on a few others I can’t remember. A ll of them seem to manage to consistently have planes which work. That is not a statement I can make about any of the US carriers: I reckon I have about a 10% strike rate on maintenance delays with them recently. Serves me right.

I’m in Japan so I can’t tell if this is current or old, but if you are still in Honolulu Airport, and the bar you are in isn’t already the Kona Brewery one, then I recommend taking the five minute walk to get to the Kona Brewery bar/restaurant and trying their stuff, and pizza.

It’s likely getting another plane, I doubt if the part is missing that they can get it flown in and the plane back up in 9 hours since the flights are all 5-9 hours.

A short distance from the airport is the Harley Shop on Nimitz/whatever the street name may have changed to. They have a pretty good motorcycle museum on the upper levels if it has reopened in the last 2 years. Not too mention some nice new motorcycles on the showroom floor (Harleys, Truimphs, a couple other brands.
